Trial delayed for man accused of running drug cartel

The trial of an allegedly key player in Chicago’s largest narcotics conspiracy was postponed today until Oct. 9.

Jesus Vicente Zambada-Niebla, allegedly the highest-ranking Mexican drug cartel leader to be tried in Chicago, had been scheduled to go on trial next month.

U.S. District Judge Ruben Castillo delayed the trial in part because of the complicated nature of the case. The evidence includes classified documents.

Officials at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse beefed up security for Wednesday's hearing, posting a metal detector outside Castillo's courtroom that spectators had to pass through.

Zambada-Niebla was one of dozens indicted in 2010 on charges of trafficking tons of cocaine and heroin into the Chicago area.
